Residents asked to clean up to prevent breeding of dengue

From today onwards residents of all households, especially in the Western Province, should keep thier environment clean to prevent the breeding of dengue mosquitos, Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

Addressing a ceremony to mark the World Environment Day yesterday at the SOBA exhibition at the Vihara Mahadevi Park in Colombo he said mosquitoes breed rapidly during the months of May, June, July and August and it is everybody’s responsibility to make sure that their environment is free of mosquito breeding places. If they could continue with their cleaning activities at least for four Saturdays a month the mission would be completed.

Ranawaka said that he had instructed all Provincial Councils and the 6,000 schools in the island to keep their surrounding clean.

"If we fail to take immediate measures Chickengunaya and Malaria too could creep in," he warned.
