10 more UNPers to join Govt

COLOMBO: Agriculture Minister Hemakumara Nanayakkara yesterday revealed that another 10 UNP MPs were ready to join the Government in the near future. These UNP MPs were having discussions with the Government and the UNP (D) Group to join the Government.

These discussions are conducted in secret, the Minister told a media briefing at the Agriculture Ministry yesterday.

"I am fully confident that these 10 active UNP MPs will join hands with the Government at the appropriate time," he said.

According to Minister Nanayakkara, a majority of UNP MPs are frustrated and have lost confidence in the policies of the party. Minister Nanayakkara said as the Government has mustered a clear majority in Parliament, the Government has no intention whatsoever to go for a snap election. "We are a very stable Government.

Therefore President Mahinda Rajapaksa will hold the General Election only at the scheduled time in 2010." The present focus of the Government is to end the conflict and work towards rapid economic growth in the country.

The Government is fulfilling both these tasks in a meaningful manner. However, the Government has the ability to face any snap election, the Minister added.
